Inspired by various dance disciplines such as modern, tap and ballet that Helen did through her childhood and teenage years, as well as contemporary dance in early adult life. Helen developed a love for movement. Helen then decided to study sport and exercise through ETA. She has freelanced in many studios in Cape Town.
Helen has also worked for the Ajax Cape Town soccer team and youth division as a fitness and core instructor from 2004 – 2011. In 2006-2009 she was part of the Nike fitness dance team. Her fascination for movement especially centralized around core work led her to pursue pilates where she studied through Stellenbosch University. She continued to grow her knowledge in various applications of pilates such as STOTT, Colleen Craig- pilates on a ball and the Gravity system. It wasn’t too long when she began to realize the powerful benefits of pilates on not only the body but also the mind.
Helen was inspired to take the various principles of exercise and pilates that she studied and use the knowledge she gained through her teaching experience to develop a way of training that would cover all aspects of training yet centering around the core. Taking into account the latest research on the benefits of fascia, eccentric and vestibular exercises she looked into a training method that would train the body in this way.
Helen has always loved art, psychology and movement. Due to all these compelling factors and 14 years teaching experience, she founded SALT. (Suspension, Aerial, Lifting, Training techniques.) All exercises done in a SALT class have been based on evidence-based research.
SALT classes were held in Helen’s private studio in Tamboerskloof and will now be held at CORE FIT.
SALT is recommended by The Sports Science Physiotherapy Centre. Helen and her husband have two children. She has embarked to continue her degree in psychology this year as she believes that the body and mind are connected. Helen is also a qualified photographer. She is also the author of AWAKEN which is a photo journal of various aspects of her life.
